The mounting hole on the gate needs to be high enough up on the gate so the arm can swing around and lay on the rail.   To make the spring not drag on the rail of  the trailer, the length of this arm needs to be at least as long as it is from where you are mounting it to the gate to the top of the rail when the gate is in the down position.  The arm is 1-1/2 inch angle iron and the brace is 1/4 by 1-1/4 inch flat iron.  Use at least 7/16 grade 5 bolts, because there is a lot of pressure on the bolts.  You don't want any thing breaking, to make the spring shot at someone and hurting them.  Please be careful.  This might look stupid, but it works.  When the garage door spring is adjusted right, I can lift this gate with one finger.  You could also use 2 smaller springs 1 on each side.  Good Luck.  Eric ELM
